Every website and servers do have a maintenance. Facebook also have a maintenance, facebook have maintenance to a random accounts only not to whole website. They aim to reduce the current users for the sake of their servers.

Each user who access the homepage of facebook has a bunch of queries like what other website have. Without maintenance, website can easily take down.

The load of the server depends on how many users who currently use the website, for example. You are currently accessing our website, 1 user can cost a amount of RAM to produce the request page that you want to visit. Just like what you're doing when you are copying a file from your computer to another device.

The server will be easily burn down if they don't have a maintenance.
